- Scammers impersonate friends — always verify their identity
If someone you know messages you in a messenger asking for an urgent money transfer, don’t rush. Scammers often hack accounts or create look-alike profiles and contact people pretending to be their friends or relatives.
Before sending money, make sure it’s really your acquaintance:
• call them using their regular phone number or through another communication channel;
• ask a personal question that only they would know the answer to;
• ask them to send a short voice or video message.
If you have any doubts, it’s safer to refuse the transfer and inform the person that their account may have been compromised. Protect your money and your personal information.
